Earwigs have incomplete metamorphosis — nymphs look like small adults
Mother lays 20–80 oval eggs in soil; guards actively
Pale, pincers forming, stays near egg cluster
Darkens with each molt; pincers develop fully
Dark reddish-brown, 0.5–0.75 inch, prominent pincers
Adults overwinter in soil and emerge in spring
Found under mulch, rocks, and in garden beds at night
Earwigs are instantly recognizable by their rear pincers (cerci). At 0.5–0.75 inches, dark reddish-brown, they look menacing but are not dangerous to humans. The pincers are used for defense and mating, not attack. Earwigs are nocturnal, hide in damp crevices during the day, and are one of the most frequently misidentified garden insects in Philadelphia.

No — this is a myth. Earwigs have no interest in human ears. The name comes from Old English folklore. There is no documented case of an earwig burrowing into a human ear.
Earwig pincers can lightly pinch if handled but rarely break skin. It is not painful and they inject no venom. They pose no meaningful threat to people or pets.
Eliminate moisture around your foundation, clear mulch and leaf litter from against the house, and seal entry points. Yellow outdoor lighting attracts fewer insects than white light.
