Bright red, less than 1mm; front legs very long
Thousands appear on sunny walls in spring and fall
Leave a red stain — vacuum instead of squishing
Clover mites (Bryobia praetiosa) are the tiny bright red or reddish-brown arachnids that appear by the thousands on sunny windowsills, walls, and siding in spring and fall. They are NOT blood-sucking — they feed exclusively on plants. They do not bite humans, do not carry disease, and cannot survive indoors. However, crushing them leaves a red stain on curtains and walls.

No. Clover mites are much smaller than bed bugs (under 1mm vs 5-7mm), bright red, and found on windowsills and exterior walls — not on mattresses. They do not feed on blood.
Clover mites migrate in spring and fall when outdoor temperatures shift. They move toward warm structures and accumulate on south- and west-facing windows and walls. Lush lawns and dense vegetation against your foundation encourage them.
Do NOT crush them — they stain. Vacuum them up with a hose attachment. Create a plant-free, 18–24 inch gravel or mulch barrier around your foundation. Acaricide spray on exterior walls and around windows in early spring and fall prevents entry.
